Visit of the King of Bhutan to the Bangladesh Special Economic Zone

On March 27th, 2024, His Majesty Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, King of Bhutan visited the Bangladesh Special Economic Zone (BSEZ). The Kingdom of Bhutan is considering the development of an economic zone in northern Bangladesh, and this visit was made to inspect the economic zone as a leading G2G initiative.

On the day, His Excellency Mr. IWAMA Kiminori, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, Mr. ICHIGUCHI Tomohide, Chief Representative, JICA Bangladesh office, and Executive Chairman of Bangladesh Economic Zones Authority (BEZA) Mr. Shaikh Yusuf Harun were present. Mr. Kawachi, Managing Director of BSEZ gave a presentation on the project. His Majesty King Wangchuck asked a wide range of questions such as BSEZ’s incentives, advantages of Bangladesh compared to ASEAN countries, and the quality of the industrial park’s infrastructure, and there was an active exchange of opinions with the Japanese Embassy and Bangladesh governmental officials.

After the ceremony and meeting at BSEZ, the delegation visited the factory of Singer Bangladesh Limited, the first tenant of BSEZ, and inspect their production line of refrigerators.

King Wangchuck expressed his expectations and appreciation for the success of the BSEZ project, and all BSEZ officials renewed their commitment to the project. We will continue to contribute to the realization of Bangladesh’s prosperity and dreams by meeting the growing demand for manufacturing as the country’s economy grows.
