1985

Plaza Accord, the Birth of the Industrial Park Initiative

Following the 1985 Plaza Accord, the yen appreciated rapidly, prompting Japanese manufacturers to expand overseas. Seizing this opportunity, Sumitomo Corporation launched its industrial park initiative to support global manufacturing.

1990s

1990

Indonesia: East Jakarta Industrial Park

At a time when industrial park development was limited to state-owned firms, Sumitomo Corporation broke new ground. Through trusted partnerships and government negotiations, a Presidential Decree enabled Indonesia’s first joint venture industrial park with a foreign company.

1996

Philippines: First Philippines Industrial Park

With strong government support for foreign investment, the Philippines emerged as a promising production and export base. Recognizing this potential, Sumitomo Corporation partnered with the Lopez Group to establish an industrial park through a joint venture.

Vietnam: Thang Long Industrial Park

In the 1990s, amid Vietnam’s rapid growth, Sumitomo Corporation established Thang Long Industrial Park near Hanoi—anticipating future potential in the north and aiming to support its development. The park’s name honors Hanoi’s historical identity, “Thang Long,” meaning Rising Dragon.

2006

Vietnam: Thang Long Industrial Park II

Following the success of the first park, Sumitomo Corporation established Thang Long Industrial Park II in Hung Yen Province to accommodate growing demand. With Phase I and II fully sold out, Phase III began sales in 2024, continuing the expansion.

Thailand: Amata City Industrial Park

Sumitomo Corporation formed a business alliance with Amata Corporation, Thailand’s largest industrial park developer, and began sales agency operations.

2012

Cambodia: Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone

Entered sales agency operations with Phnom Penh Special Economic Zone Company, part of Cambodia’s largest conglomerate, Royal Group.

Myanmar: Thilawa Special Economic Zone

Sumitomo Corporation led a Japan–Myanmar public-private partnership to establish an industrial park company, appointing its president. A one-stop service center in the Special Economic Zone greatly improved Myanmar’s investment environment.

Vietnam: Thang Long Industrial Park (Vinh Phuc)

Established in Phu Tho Province(formerly known as Vinh Phuc Province) to meet rising demand, TLIP III is located just 30 minutes from Noi Bai Airport and sold out quickly. We continue to deliver high-quality services backed by years of experience.

Philippines: First Industrial Township

Sumitomo Corporation acquired and redeveloped an industrial park located 3 km from the First Philippine Industrial Park, established in 1996, creating a sister site to meet growing demand.

2016

India: Origins Chennai Industrial Estate

Sumitomo Corporation partnered with the Mahindra Group to launch Mahindra Industrial Park Chennai. Construction began in the Origins Chennai, tapping into India’s strong economic growth and workforce as a rising manufacturing hub.

Cambodia: Poipet Special Economic Zone

Following the Phnom Penh SEZ, Sumitomo Corporation partnered with Royal Group to begin sales agency operations for the Poipet Special Economic Zone near the Thai border.

Morocco: Tangier Automotive City

Sumitomo Corporation signed a sales agency agreement with Automotive City, a special economic zone operated by the Tangier Mediterranean Special Agency. Located near the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier is a growing logistics hub connecting Morocco and Europe.

Bangladesh: Bangladesh Special Economic Zone

Sumitomo Corporation helped establish Bangladesh’s only model SEZ through a Japan–Bangladesh partnership, supporting industrial growth and job creation with international-standard infrastructure.

Vietnam: Quang Tri Industrial Park

Quang Tri, once the dividing line in the Vietnam War, is now the eastern gateway of the East–West Economic Corridor.Sumitomo Corporation develops an industrial park there with Amata and VSIP.

Started sales agency business for Subang Smartpolitan, an industrial park in Subang Province that was designated as a national strategic project in Indonesia.
