Visit to Thilawa SEZ by Aung San Suu Kyi, the State Consellor of Myanmar

On 21st August, Aung San Suu Kyi, the State Counsellor of Myanmar, and 3 (three) Ministers(*) of the State visited Thilawa SEZ.

At the meeting of Myanmar Japan Thilawa Development (“MJTD”), Mr. Set Aung (Director of MJTD, Chairman of the Management Committee of Thilawa SEZ (Senior Deputy Minister of Ministry of Planning and Finance)), Mr. Maruyama (Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan in Myanmar) and Mr. Win Aung (Chairman of MJTD) gave a speech, and Mr. Shimizu, the President of MJTD (dispatched from Sumitomo Corporation) gave an overview of Thilawa SEZ. Then they visited the factories of tenants such as Yakult, Suzuki, Foster Electric, and Zeifam.

Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi expressed her appreciation for the progress of the Thilawa SEZ.
She commented that “Thilawa SEZ is a wonderful achievement that we can be proud of not only in Myanmar but also in the ASEAN countries”. She put emphasis on the importance of coordination among the relevant departments and cooperation in relation with the public and business companies and felt that all parties (Myanmar and Japanese Government, Private, Business companies, Local Communities) are doing this well in Thilawa. She believes that job creation is of course really important, but she feels that this project shows that infrastructure development is a prerequisite of its success. “

Today, more than 100 companies have chosen Thilawa SEZ, and the total number of employees of the tenants there has reached over 10,000 in total.
Myanmar’s economic development has just begun and all concerned parties will make further efforts to realize the further prosperity and dreams of all concerned stakeholder.
